ALEX ZHANG

HOCKEY
I am a national-level ice hockey player ranked in the top 2% of over 800 athletes competing in national tournaments, earning official National Second Grade Athlete Certification. I was awarded the BNDS Talent Scholarship twice, placing me in the top 1% of over 5,000 students, while maintaining high academic performance alongside elite athletic training.
Selected from more than 200 athletes to represent the Beijing Youth Ice Hockey Team, I trained for 12 years, averaging 10–12 hours per week, while balancing AP coursework and serving as a defensive leader on the ice.
Honors & Recognition
Leadership in School Hockey Club
As President and Captain of the Beijing National Day School Hockey Varsity and Club, I am responsible for coordinating weekly practices and mentoring five younger players in playmaking and defensive systems. Under my guidance, multiple team members advanced to district and city-level teams.
I also integrated design and entrepreneurship into club culture—creating BNDS-themed keychains and card holders to fund new uniforms and training equipment.

Refereeing & Training Innovation
I passed rigorous provincial examinations to become a Certified Ice Hockey Referee, gaining a systems-level understanding of the sport from both competitive and regulatory perspectives.
This dual perspective—seeing hockey as both a player and an official—shaped how I approach coaching: not just correcting technique, but teaching decision-making, positioning, fairness, and game structure.

I.The Future of Hockey — Conceptual Exploration
I also conceptualized a futuristic VR hockey environment featuring robotic players and multi-level arenas, exploring how emerging technology could reshape training methods, accessibility, and spectator engagement in the sport.
Technology-Enabled Hockey Instruction
II.Blade of Time — VR Hockey Simulation for Inclusive Learning
I designed Blade of Time, a VR-based hockey simulation system that recreates gameplay through immersive UI, player POVs, and interactive mechanics. The system allows learners to experience real hockey scenarios without the constraints of ice time, equipment, or physical access—lowering entry barriers while preserving tactical realism.
III.Hockey Vision Pro — AI-Powered Training & Feedback System
As System & Algorithm Designer, I developed an AI-driven hockey training platform addressing the lack of personalized feedback in traditional coaching. The system integrates stat-capture tools and video annotation, training models on professional game footage to analyze mechanics, positioning, turnovers, and decision-making.
Piloted within a hockey community of 200+ participants, the platform helped players identify blind spots, improve spatial awareness, and refine team strategies through data-informed feedback—bridging athletic training with applied AI.
Community Engagement
To expand hockey access at the grassroots level and promote hockey development in youth, I founded and led a four-member volunteer coaching team at a public primary school Dianchang Road School in Beijing. We coached 40+ underserved students (Grades 1–6) through weekly clinics, teaching foundational skills, teamwork, and confidence-building. I wish to make hockey more inclusive and accessible across China.

Olympic Sport Optimization — International Math Modeling
As Program Lead, I co-authored a 26-page paper addressing the lack of objective criteria for adding or removing Olympic sports. Using AHP, EWM, and TOPSIS, I built a multi-criteria ranking system across seven dimensions, then applied grey forecasting and logistic regression to predict candidates for the 2032 and 2036 Olympics, including Radio Direction Finding, Parkour, and Frisbee.
